How to choose the right mattress?
Choosing a mattress is always a combination of your body, your sleeping habits and your sense of comfort. At BERNUSS, we don’t just focus on “firmness” – but rather on what your body needs (back, shoulders, hips, weight, side/back sleeping). A short consultation works best – we will recommend a solution that will suit you.
What is the difference between a natural and a classic (foam) mattress?
Classic mattresses are most often made of various types of foam, which may seem comfortable, but often have a shorter lifespan and less natural breathability. BERNUSS natural mattresses are built on materials that breathe, naturally regulate temperature, and work with the body gently and stably – without the feeling of “sag”. The result is sleep that is deeper, more peaceful and more natural.
Is the BERNUSS mattress also suitable for back pain?
Yes – and that’s when many people realize how much of a difference a mattress makes. We don’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution, but a mattress that supports your spine while relieving pressure points. If you have back pain or wake up feeling sore, we recommend a short consultation – so we can choose the right combination.
What materials do you use?
We use high-quality natural layers (depending on the type of mattress), such as: cotton, horsehair, wool, cashmere and other natural fillings. Each material has its own meaning – it is not there “just for the name”, but for its function: breathability, elasticity, comfort, durability.
Can you make a custom mattress?
Yes. We can customize mattresses according to:
- size (even atypical)
- mattress height
- comfort / hardness
- specific needs (e.g. back, weight, side sleeping)

Is it possible to try the mattress?
Yes. You can try out mattresses in our showroom, where we can also recommend the right type for you based on how you actually sleep and what you need. Trying it out is not just about lying down for 2 minutes – it’s about the feeling that’s right for your body.
How does the consultation process work when choosing a mattress?
Simple and natural. We will ask you a few things:
- how you sleep (side/back/stomach)
- Do you treat back/neck/shoulders?
- How do you feel about the mattresses you’ve had so far?
- What is your priority (softness vs. stability)?
Then we will propose a solution that makes sense – without pressure.
What is the delivery time for a mattress or bed?
Since BERNUSS mattresses and beds are made by hand and are made by people – not machines – we operate on the principle of booking a production date. This means that you reserve a place in advance so that we can fully dedicate ourselves to your product and to the quality we rely on. The delivery time is usually a few weeks – however, we will always tell you the real date in advance according to the current production.
Why are BERNUSS mattresses more expensive than regular mattresses?
Because they are built on what makes the biggest difference in a mattress:
- high-quality natural materials
- handmade
- layers that have a function (not marketing)
- durability and stability
- comfort that won’t fade after a few years

Do you have more affordable solutions if I don't want the whole bed?
Yes. BERNUSS is not just about luxury beds – many customers start with a mattress or topper. If you want quality sleep without a big investment in an entire bed, a mattress or topper is the perfect place to start.
How to care for a mattress so that it lasts as long as possible?
We recommend:
- use a mattress protector
- ventilate the bedding and the room
- maintain a suitable grid / substrate
- depending on the type of mattress, occasional turning (if appropriate)
When you buy, we will tell you exactly what is ideal for your specific type.
Is the mattress hard or soft?
The mattress should be properly stable – not extremely hard or sagging. We address comfort in a way that allows the body to relax, but the spine to remain in the correct position.
Are mattresses suitable for allergy sufferers?
Often yes – natural materials are naturally breathable and, when properly cared for, create a healthier sleeping environment. If you have a specific allergy or sensitivity, we will tell you a suitable solution.
How long does a natural mattress last?
With a high-quality composition and proper care, the lifespan of natural mattresses is significantly longer than that of conventional mattresses. Our goal is not a “mattress for a few years”, but a long-term solution.
Is it possible to make a mattress for an atypical space?
Yes – we can also produce atypical dimensions, for example, custom-made for attics, custom-made for furniture, or non-traditional frames.
Toppers
What is a topper for?
A topper is a top comfort layer that can:
- soften a harder mattress
- increase comfort
- improve hygiene (as a protective layer)
- extend the life of the mattress
Will a topper help with back pain?
In some cases, yes – especially if the mattress is too hard or uneven. However, if the mattress is worn out or the wrong size, a topper is more of a temporary solution. We’re happy to advise you on what makes sense.
Is the topper also suitable for a couch or sofa bed?
Yes – a topper can make a huge difference even on a sofa, where sleeping is harder and less comfortable.
Beds and headboards
Can you make a custom bed?
Yes. The dimensions, height, headboard and fabric can be customized. The bed should fit not only the interior, but also your everyday comfort.
What types of fronts do you offer?
We have more styles – from clean, smooth lines, to subtle vertical stripes, to more decorative patterns. When choosing, it will always be helpful to consider whether you want the front to be dominant or just a subtle addition to the space.
Can the covers be cleaned?
Yes – gentle cleaning and regular maintenance work best for home care. When choosing a fabric, we will also recommend more practical options if you have children or want a simpler b.
Delivery and service
Is delivery abroad possible?
Yes, of course. BERNUSS also has a strong presence in the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno, Ostrava) and our products have their home with clients in various European countries and beyond. We have clients in the Czech Republic and in other countries (including Switzerland and Dubai). We will confirm the specific shipping price and date individually according to the product and delivery location.
Do you also provide installation?
Yes, we also provide transportation and assembly. We will always recommend options based on your location and specific order.
Complaints and warranty
What is the warranty?
The warranty depends on the specific product. We will tell you everything transparently during the selection process and in the order documents.
How does a complaint work?
If something happens, we will resolve it humanely and fairly. Just contact us, send us the information and we will find a solution as quickly as possible.
Showroom and contact
Is it necessary to make an appointment to visit the showroom?
It’s not necessary, but it’s ideal. When you order, we can give you our full attention and prepare recommendations and demonstrations exactly according to what you’re looking for.
Can you also give advice online?
Yes. Many clients also make their selection remotely – especially when they cannot travel to Bratislava or are from a greater distance. It is not ideal, but it is possible. We can advise you in detail by phone or message so that you can be sure of your choice even without a personal visit – almost the same as if you were directly in the showroom.
