Why is this position more challenging?
Sleeping on your stomach causes the spine to curve more, especially in the lower back. At the same time, your head is turned to one side, which can increase tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.
If your pelvis sinks too deeply into the mattress, the natural curvature of your spine will become even more pronounced. Conversely, a mattress that is too firm can put uncomfortable pressure on your chest, shoulders, or knees.
What to Look for When Making a Choice
People who most often sleep on their stomachs generally benefit from a mattress that provides firm support, which helps prevent the pelvis from sinking too far. At the same time, however, it should remain flexible enough so as not to put pressure on exposed parts of the body.
Choosing the right pillow is also important. A pillow that is too high can increase strain on the cervical spine, so it is advisable to consider the mattress and pillow as a single functional unit.
